Phrasal structure in Khoekhoe: Puzzles from focus movement

Khoekhoe (Nama-Damara) is a Khoe-Kwadi language primarily spoken in Namibia and parts of South Africa. It has been reported that the word order in Khoekhoe can be described as subject clitic second by analogy with verb-second languages: Khoekhoe is underlyingly SOV, has a relatively free word order, and a clause-initial topological prefield hosting various preposed elements followed by an obligatory subject-agreeing clitic. This presentation will explore the phrasal structure in Khoekhoe and the puzzles with regard to focus movement in this language.
